Jill Scott was born on April 4, 1972 on the 4th of April 1972 in Philadelphia Pennsylvania to her mother Joyce Scott. She was raised by her mother and grandmother. The only child she has. Scott received her education at Philadelphia High School for Girls. Upon the completion of her studies, Scott enrolled into Temple University. She studied secondary education over the course of two years while also working. Her dream was to become an English teacher at the high school level. The dream however was put on hold when after 3 years of studying and working as an aide to teachers, she was kicked out of the college. Her career began as a spoken-word artist and performing live at poetry readings. Her next collaboration was to Amir Quest Love Thompson from The Roots. They wrote You Got Me together. In Roots performance she came out as an artist. She secured subsequent collaborations with Eric Benet Will Smith Common. While on the Canada tour of The Broadway musical Rent She gained invaluable experience performing. She was the first signed artist for label Hidden Beach Recordings label.
